In the end, there's nothing quite as effective as Made in Abyss at balancing mystery, whimsy, gore, and pathos. The surprise hit of the season—but as a long-time fan of director Shingo Adachi, I always knew he had it in him. On the surface, Lycoris Recoil might look like a "girls with guns" show with niche appeal, but its cheerful willingness to embrace silly Hollywood-esque action setpieces made it a Aninewsworld very easy watch every week. Chisato and Takina are undoubtedly the couple of the year, with their buddy cop dynamic that very quickly blossoms into genuine closeness and intimacy. The macro plot might be a little too glib to take seriously at times, but every emotional beat around those two girls lands with perfect marksmanship. The leaves are changing colors and the summer heat is finally subsiding.

Speaking of romances, this is a really great time for fans of romance anime of all stripes and colors. I had extremely tough time deciding between this anime and  my other favorite romance this season My Dress-Up Darling, another anime I also love a whole lot. Picking between them felt like trying to pick favorite children, but ultimately what made me pick Sasaki and Miyano was how well it captures the slow day-to-day life moments. Its acknowledgement of both internal and external roadblocks towards our personal feelings, especially queer ones. At first Sasaki and Miyano might feel rather modest in both production and story. And in some ways, it is, but it's able to nail the atmosphere and timing in a way that feels intimate.
In the Daily Streaming reviews I jokingly referred to it as the "yogurt arc." In essence it felt like a prolonged commercial for Activia. I had a stupidly difficult time picking a runner-up for this as the Winter 2021 season is something I'd call a "good harvest" in terms of the sheer amount of excellent anime. I debated both Horimiya and Jujutsu Kaisen for this spot, but in the end I had to go with Attack on Titan's final season for two primary reasons.
So I want to give The Golden City arc, and its stellar adaptation, credit for catapulting the franchise back into my esteem. Make no mistake; this is still the same Made in Abyss that loves to pair grandeur with gross-out material, so it's not by any means transformative. Here, however, the abject horror is applied both more broadly and more purposefully in pursuit of big questions. What does it mean that we're all just tubes  of meat possessed by yearning? And if that's the case, what do we struggle for, and how do we do it? Made in Abyss is, to put it in unfairly reductive terms, about stuff.

While the individual popularity and marketability of a series are likely the biggest factors behind getting an anime, it's certainly an important piece of context for any modern work of media that touches on those themes. Vikings in England is the basic summary of the shonen/seinen anime and manga Vinland Saga. The story focuses on the combination of dramatizing Cnut the Great's rise to power with a revenge plot focused on Icelandic explorer Thorfinn Karlsefni Thórdarson. The currently airing shonen anime and manga, Kingdom, might seem a little out of left field for some people, as it depicts events that happen in China, however, it quickly goes away upon watching and getting engrossed, as many fans have done. The basic plot summary is that two orphans, Xin and Piao, train to become the "Great Generals of the Heavens."

Instead of a charming story about two people who aren't quite who they seem to be, we get a rushed tale that gets progressively less sweet as questionable choices are made. Hori comes out looking cruel, Miyamura's progress towards being comfortable and happy with himself isn't as clear, and none of the side characters get their due. It's a sad example of a series that started out with everything going for it only to fizzle as it went on, leaving a regrettable bad taste for me to remember it by. Here is everything we know so far about Hell’s Paradise such as the release date, trailer, story, and news.
