At the time of your initial consultation your surgeon will determine what type of procedure is best suited to you. It is not uncommon to combine upper blepharoplasty with ptosis correction. This muscle and its attachments can lengthen and stretch out with age causing the upper lid to drop lower over your eye. Upper blepharoplasty skin and muscle excision provides access an opportunity to correct this lengthening and allow you to open the eyelid wider, which is a natural and youthful look. Not all patients will require a ptosis correction but for those that do it will significantly enhance the outcome of upper blepharoplasty alone.
To address ptosis, the surgeon can tighten the muscle and remove excess skin, and tissue to help raise the upper eyelid. This procedure is performed to make the eyes look better rested on the upper lids and to upper blepharoplasty remove the puffiness and bags on the lower lids. There are three components that make up the eyelids; skin, muscle, and fat. Fat bulging creates a puffiness look on the lower lids as well as the upper lids.
The eyes are a focal point for your appearance and when they don’t look their best, you often don’t feel your best. Over time the skin around the eyes becomes thinner and loses its elasticity and displaced fat pockets may cause puffiness or ‘bags’ under the eyes. Excess skin may result in hooding of the upper lids, which in some cases impairs vision.
It’s not really possible to get a significant eyelid lift without surgery, but a few nonsurgical eye lift treatments can offer a mild improvement. As your skin continues to age and droop, you may need a second procedure. “We’re not stopping the aging process, just setting it back a bit by making your eyelids look like they did when you were younger,” says Dr. Kapadia. Since an eyelid lift is typically done in an outpatient setting, plan to have someone you trust drive you to and from the surgery center or hospital. If your surgeon will need to remove excess skin, the incision is usually made just below or behind the lower lash line.
During lower eyelid surgery your doctor will make cuts in the lower eyelid and then remove excess skin and fat. Then he or she will sew the skin back together to create a smoother, lifted look. Eyelid surgery tightens up the skin and muscle of the eyelids, reduces excess fat, and lifts the eyelid skin to make the eyes appear more open. Younger patients who inherited heavy eyelid skin or double lid folds, often seek surgery to achieve a more distinguished eyelid crease. Once the incisions are made, the surgeons will separate the muscles and tissues from the skin, trim the sagging skin, and close the incisions with fine sutures. The incisions take around 4 to 5 days to heal, after which the sutures are removed. If the lower eyelid blepharoplasty is to be done, the surgeon cuts below your eyelashes or inside the lower eyelid.
Check your insurance plan and speak with your provider about whether or not eyelid surgery is covered. Following the surgery, you may experience puffiness, pain, and swelling in the eye area. The surgeon will then remove or reposition fat deposits, tighten muscles, or remove excess skin. Cosmetic eyelid surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. A blepharoplasty can address problems in the upper, lower or both eye lids depending on the anatomy and needs of each patient. It may also be combined with other surgical procedures such as a face lift or brow lift to provide additional rejuvenation. If you experience any concerning symptoms or complications during your recovery, such as severe pain, bleeding, or changes in vision, it is important to contact your surgeon immediately. Following all post-operative care instructions and attending follow-up appointments as directed can help minimize your risk of complications and ensure the best possible outcome from your eyelid surgery.
The procedure removes excess skin and fat, before tightening the muscles. Surgical planning involves deciding whether upper or lower eyelids, or both will be operated on. Any adjunctive procedures to be performed should also be determined. Lower eyelid skin excision or laser resurfacing is another key decision.
In addition to this, eye make-up is not to be worn, you should not drink alcohol for 2-3 weeks, and you should keep your face out of the sun.
