The 1998 Meursault Village is surprisingly backward and reticent on the nose, eventually revealing scents of cockleshell, popcorn and almond with time, perhaps slightly more tertiary than the ’99 tasted alongside. The palate is nicely balanced with citrus lemon, orange zest and a touch of walnut.
Expect it to put on weight with some time in bottle. I'm looking forward to getting acquainted with the rest of the 2018 Coche-Dury portfolio in the near future. It could be said that Coche, unwittingly I would surmise, instigated the worldwide trend towards the reductive ‘struck match’ flavours in white wines. The 2017 Meursault bouchard chassagne montrachet Village is a brilliant young wine, unwinding in the glass with notes of crisp Anjou pear, green apple, dried white flowers, toasted sesame and hazelnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and elegantly satiny, with racy acids, discrete structuring dry extract, and a long, elegantly chalky finish.

Besides the village wines makes Jean-Francois Coche also makes three 1er crus Meursault Caillerets, Meursault Perriere and Meursault Genevriers. The first two have been made for many years, while Genevrieres was added to the domaine in 2003. In addition to the three Meursault 1er crus, he also makes Puligny-Montrachet Enseignères, and a legendary Corton-Charlemagne, which is nearly impossible to find – and cost a fortune. The production of wine are scattered in a large number of vineyards, see the table below, and on most of these vineyards Coche-Dury have less than one hectare. The 4.25 ha Meursault village is spread over 5 to 6 parcels typically vinified and bottled separately.

Nowhere in the Côte de Beaune does the Chardonnay grape do better than it does here. Along the village streets are a succession of little houses belonging to the vineyard workers, mixed with more imposing dwellings. The stone-work on the 53 metre-high church tower looks like it... The 2011 Meursault Village is showing beautifully, offering up a classic bouquet of crisp green orchard fruit, citrus oil, toasted hazelnuts and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and incisive, it's deep and layered at the core, with a racy spine of acidity and a long, penetrating finish. This is a comparatively precocious vintage for Coche-Dury that can already be approached today.
