Recommendations for Moroccan Desert Tours
The camels lanky legs do an awful lot of wobbling as they make their way up and over and down the sand dunes. My butt was killing me after about 10 minutes into the 90 minute journey. Getting from the main road to our specific campsite was about a two mile journey over towering sand dunes, which meant about 90 minutes via camel transit.
They then took us in groups in 4×4 SUVs, and driven around the desert. It wasn’t well-communicated beforehand exactly what we were doing, but we morocco desert tours were happy for the excursion. However, getting to the highest dunes, the most interesting attraction, usually takes 30 minutes on the camel.
When you arrive at camp, you are welcomed with mint tea – you can choose a little table set up in the sand to relax at while you sip tea and soak in the view. For me experience we drove to the desert and I don't remember it being boring or anything. We stopped off at places along the way and I remember the journey being really enjoyable. Maybe see if you could do a helicopter one way and a car transfer the other way? I'd also stay in Morocco for the whole holiday - there's loads to see and do in Morocco and it's such a gorgeous country.
Even though there was no heat in the rooms, we were given so many blankets and a hot water bottle. If you are an independent traveler then you can book camping in the Sahara Desert in Morocco directly from a company that provides this experience. I had taken down the contact details of the desert tour company but unfortunately cannot find it anymore. To be honest, most people don't really get a lot of sleep when they camp in the desert and one night experiencing it is enough. Plus, there's not a lot to do during the day so I think you'd get bored if you had too much time there during the day.
I and my friend decide to stay an overnight in this luxury desert camp and it is really exceeded our expectations. We really like the location of the camp which is in the dunes. The spacious luxury tents are very clean and comfortable.
Traditional carpets are adorned the floors of the camps and the handcrafted furniture are well-decorated to compliment your preferences. The sleeping tents include the blend of authentic Moroccan design and the modern to submerge you in this exceptional region of Africa. Erg Chebbi are taller and absolutely more awe inspiring seeing these tall mountains of sand raising out of nowhere. They are easier to reach so great for families with kids or elderly.
In luxury camp you will find shower, sink and toilet right in your tent. Some luxury camps have bathroom as part of your sleeping tent. Some the one of higher standard have bathroom set as another attached tent . Please note that you might not always get running water in luxury camp especially if you are planning trip to Erg Chegaga where water is very rare. In luxury camps there you find chemical toilets and buckets fill with water for your shower. Having said that, if you’re on a tight budget during your trip to Morocco then you’ll still have an incredible time if you do one of the cheap Sahara desert tours.
Our drivers can pick you up in Casablanca, Marrakech, Ouarzazate or Zagora or any other location in Morocco, and transport you to to and from the camp. You will not find any flushing toilets, so may not have any other option but to rough it on the sand or probably in a very elementary toilet, where you must pour buckets of water to “flush”. Most of this area is hamada which has its own beauty and fascination. In the case of the Erg’s, the surface is sand brought down from the Ziz and Rheris rivers, which creates the huge golden sand dunes in Morocco that people come east for when the desert calls. If you are going to Morocco, visiting the Sahara Desert should be at the top of your bucket list. Of course, the simpler tent camps are still great fun too. This is also the time to get out your camera and practice night photography. Since there is no light pollution, you can take beautiful pictures here. Unfortunately, there was too much sand in the air with us, but for that reason alone we will have to go back. You have to drive a long way to get there yourself anyway.
The moon had been really bright at night, so it was also nice to see the sky after the moon had set as the stars were incredible. And of course we took the time to stop for a bit to watch the sunrise over the dunes. During our visit to Morocco, Mark and I travelled from Marrakech to Merzouga to spend a night camping in the Sahara Desert. There are also day trips with jeeps where you go much further into the desert and visit the nomads. Here too you can combine this with an overnight stay in a luxury tent camp.
