Things to Do & Eat in Taitung

A high-concentration sulfur spring, the milky white spring water is also known as a "milk soup" by locals. Fanfan hot spring is located in Datong Township, Yilan County. Because the ground is in the mountains, transportation there is relatively inconvenient.

This route is definitely a few hours slower, especially since there aren’t many notable stops on Route #1. By scooter, it’s going to take you a solid 4.5-6 hours to get from Taitung to Kenting on this route, while route #1 should only take about three hours in total. Xinshe is a area of picturesque terraced rice fields backed by the sea. They weren’t there yet in the picture taken above, but today Xinshe has become a new hot spot with the addition of some large statues, huts, and even a swing made of straw.
You will also visit Eluanbi Lighthouse which is one of the major attractions in the national park. This lighthouse is cylindrical shaped coloured in white and is also renowned as “the Light of East Asia” for its strong optical power of light that can reach 20 miles at most. It’s one of the few places along the entire east coast where swimming is ever permitted, due to the very strong currents and quick dropoff. As you drive south out of Hualien City on Highway 11, don’t pass up the chance to stop at Taiwan’s most unique Starbucks, built with 29 shipping containers. It’s just off Highway 11 in Ji’an township, before the highway reaches the cost.

I also must say that the 7-11 on Green Island, with it’s seaside balcony offering views of the mountains of mainland Taiwan on the horizon, easily has the best 7-11 view I’ve ever enjoyed. Like it or  not, you’ll probably end up patronizing 7-11s multiple times during your Taiwan travels. This is probably my top recommended choice for people visiting Taiwan for a short time. However, if you prefer to avoid touristy spots, you might choose one of the others instead . These towns are  some of my favorite places in all of Taiwan.
The spring stretches for about 30m and the water temperature is about 45 to 65℃ and belongs to the weakly alkaline sodium bicarbonate spring. This is a weak alkali carbonated spring and during the off-season, the spring water only reaches the ankle. However, there's a unique hot spring waterfall where the Sanguang Creek meets the hot spring.

Jinlun also has an abundance of channels that bring hot spring water to ground level. The pure sodium bicarbonate water found here is slightly alkaline with a pH ranging from 7 to 8. The clear hot spring water of Jinlun smells vaguely sulfurous and ranges from 70 to 90 degrees Celsius. The relatively high water temperature here improves circulation while leaving your skin healthy and rejuvenated. When you come to Jinlun, there’s more to do than just go to the all-natural hot springs under the red Jinlun Rainbow Bridge. Make sure to venture into surrounding mountains and take a deep breath of the fresh mountain air.
The most notable  attraction here is Brown Boulevard – a long stretch of road through lush rice fields with epic mountain backdrops. Besides cycling down Brown Boulevard, there are a couple of other noteworthy attractions. Jinfeng Township has steep mountains and flourishing forests.
